Chicago

This classic Kander and Ebb musical, set in Prohibition-era Chicago, is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, and celebrates the concept of the "celebrity criminal".

It tells the tale of Roxie Hart, a nightclub dancer who dreams of headlining in Vaudeville, kills her lover, then convinces her husband to come up with the $5000 to hire Chicago’s shrewdest, smoothtalking lawyer Billy Flynn.

Based on a 1926 play of the same name, which evolved out of true incidents recounted by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, the original Broadway production opened June 3, 1975 and was choreographed by the renowned Bob Fosse, whose style has come to be strongly identified with the show. Chicago‘s 1996 Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival on Broadway.  It was followed by a production on London’s West End, several tours and international productions, and the Academy Award-winning film version in 2002.

All up, the show has been honoured with 6 Tony Awards®, 2 Olivier Awards®, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations. And fter a decade of decadence, the multi-award winning production filled with sensational choreography and a sizzling score returned to Australia for a limited season, starring Caroline O’Connor (Velma), Sharon Millerchip (Roxie), Craig McLachlan (Filly Flynn) and Gina Riley (Mama Morton). Produced by John Frost, it proved successful once again, with Sharon Milerchip winning a 2009 Helpmann Award for best female performer in a musical. It then toured to Hong Kong and Singapore where it was equally well-received.

Produced by John Frost.
