Gaiety Theatre champions theatre that is inclusive of gay and lesbian characters. Visibility through performance can be a powerful tool to counteract prejudice and to reinforce pride within the GLBTI community.

Stephen Colyer, the artistic director of Gaiety Theatre, is a graduate of VCA, The Australian Ballet School and NIDA. He has worked as resident director on Dirty Dancing, The Full Monty The Musical, The Rocky Horror Show and Cabaret. On behalf of Sam Mendes, he was entrusted to direct Cabaret in Madrid, Seoul and Paris.
Stephen has directed Fit To Be Tied, Boston Marriage and Dying City at Darlinghurst Theatre Company. At this theatre he also directed and choreographed Hello Againand Kiss of the Spider Woman the Musical.
For The New Theatre Stephen directed and choreographed Little Shop of Horrors and What A Shock ‘N’ Shame. As dance supervisor on the ABC TV drama Dance Academy Stephen choreographed and directed many of the dance sequences.
Stephen assisted Richard Roxburgh on Twelfth Night at Belvoir Street, Richard Wherrett, Adam Cook, and Helmut Bakaitis. He appears in the films Moulin Rouge andScooby Doo and performed in Beauty and the Beast, My Fair Lady, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Wizard of Oz. He has danced with the Australian Ballet Company, The Royal Ballet of Flanders, Feld Ballet NY and numerous seasons with Opera Australia, including Neil Armfeld’s The Eighth Wonder and Barry Kosky’s Nabucco.
