Brisbane Festival

Brisbane Festival was developed by the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council as an initiative to foster the arts, evolving from the original Warana Festival, the first Arts Festival in Queensland, which began in 1961.

The theme of the Warana Festival was “entertainment for the people, by the people”, and it included a drama festival and eisteddfod, a writers’ week, a George Street Colonial Fair, a Miss Warana Pageant and various religious, sporting and other outdoors activities.

It became known as the Brisbane Festival, a biennial event, from 1996 to 2008. And in 2009, it combined with the former Riverfestival, which emerged following the successful 1988 World Expo held at South Bank along the Brisbane River.

Today, operating under the direction of the board of Major Brisbane Festivals Pty Ltd and with the creative visions of  Artistic Director Louise Bezzina, the annual Brisbane Festival is one of Australia’s premier festivals and Brisbane’s annual cultural event, a hectic and vibrant celebration of art and life, showcasing music, theatre, dance and much more, in a city that is rich in opportunity and promise.

It is being held in various theatrical locations throughout Brisbane, every September, and PowerArts has proudly supported events from the Works in Progress program as well as individual productions in recent years.
