Doctor Zhivago

Doctor Zhivago tells the story of Yuri Zhivago, a doctor, husband and father and the woman he loves, the enigmatic Lara - all set against the bloody backdrop of the Russian revolution.

Based on the novel by Boris Pasternak, in 1965 the story hit the big screen as an epic, drama romance by David Lean. Doctor Zhivago, starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, remained popular for decades, and as of 2010 was the eighth highest grossing film of all time.

The musical, with a score by Lucy Simon (Carly Simon’s sister) – the composer of The Secret Garden, had an initial workshop try-out at the La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego, California, in May 2006. But the chance to have Anthony Warlow play the leading man, interest from Producer John Frost, and more effective cost structures led to Sydney scoring the main-stage premiere.

Doctor Zhivago united an international creative team with director Des McAnuff (of Broadway’s Jersey Boys fame), Choreographer Kelly Divine (choreographer of Rock Of Ages on Broadway), and our very own Kellie Dickerson (Wicked Australia) as Musical Director. With a 25-strong Australian cast led by the amazing Anthony Warlow, the show had a successful run in 2011 at the Lyric Theatre, Star City, followed by sellout seasons in Melbourne and Brisbane. Produced by John Frost and Anita Waxman.

With co-producer Chun-Soo Shin, the Australian resident director Shaun Murphy and Dance Captain Glenn Hill, the Zhivago production team established a beautiful Korean cast in 2012 starring local talent Hong Kwang Ho, at the Charlotte Theatre in Seoul. It also a enjoyed a brief run on Broadway in 2015.

We look forward to announcing future destinations and prospects for this inspiring production.
