Wicked the musical is the infamous 2003 prequel to the Wizard of Oz, by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Hozman. Base on the 1995 NGregory Maguire novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, the story outlines the unlikely friendship between two witches of the Land of Oz – Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda(later known as Glinda – the Good Witch).

Produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, Jon. B Platt and David Sone, the original production premiered on Broadway in October 2003 with original stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, and won three Tony awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, and a Grammy Award for the original cast album.

The Australian production opened in 2008 with Amanda Harrison(Elphaba) and Lucy Durack(Glinda) in the lead roles, with a supporting cast that included Rob Mills, Anthony Callea, Rob Guest and Maggie Kirkpatrick. Jemma Rix and Bert Newton later replaced the roles of Elphaba and the Wizard respectively, and the show ran as a national tour until 2011. It later returned for a 10th Anniversary(of the Broadway opening) national tour around Australia, in 2014, featuring the same leading ladies, with Suzie Mathers replacing Durack half way through the run.

Since its opening in 2003, Wicked has become one of the most lucrative productions on Broadway. The Australian production broke Australian box-office records, which is consistent with its success internationally. After its second tour of sell-out shows, this production of Wicked has performed in over 13 cities and played to millions of patrons throughout Australia and Asia.
